Philips M8881B/05 Design Cordless Phone : Really stylish phone that works well. Only thing against

Beautiful=========i don’t think the pictures show how beautiful this looks in real life. I know it’s wrong to say a phone is good looking or indeed, handsome. Design=======i love the design. I wanted a good phone for my living room that was not only practical but ‘designer’ looking. It has had a few people commenting on its distinctive looks. Numbers========it has a good memory for storing numbers and the capacity on the answering machine is equally large. (about an hour)build quality============the build quality is top end and is perfect for anyone who likes modern design, buttons========nice and big. Call quality===========nice and clear. The conference call facility is ok but i’m not that fussed on conference calls. Overall========a beautiful looking phone with good call quality.

A very sleek design with big easy to use buttons. Instructions on use are fairly straightforward, but no so clear on use as a baby monitor. That being said, i don’t have a compatible monitor, so i am not sure how easy that is to set up. The handset sits in the cradle either way around, but it is easy to miss the charging pins, so you do have to listen out for the charging start up noise. There is a selection of ringtones and some personalisation options on the answer-phone. It sits comfortably in the hand and the call quality is exceptionally clear when in range. I highly rate this, but i couldn’t have it next to me on the bedside cabinet when charging. There is a very tiny, almost imperceptible, electrical whine that is emitted, but in the still of the night it was bothering me. If you are a light sleeper with a keen sense of hearing you may want to move it away from you.

This is a high quality product. It is well designed and pretty easy to set up and use. Only comes with short user guide, which doesn’t cover things like remote answer machine access. The extended version is not available on the philips website, but is downloadable from elsewhere on the web. Here are the specifications for the Philips M8881B/05 Design Cordless Phone:

  • Enter your model number
    to make sure this fits.
  • Sophisticated design with genuine metal highlights
  • Calibrated, seamlessly integrated keys for precise dialing
  • Smart, nicely designed cable management
  • Up to 60 min. message on your answering machine
  • Low radiation (ECO and ECO+ modes) and power consumption

This is a really nice phone. It works well with voip and i like the the design.

The design is absolutely stunning with a black high gloss finish on the handset and the base, the base and the handset form an oval formation design wise again is stunning. However i think too much focus on design gets in the way of functionality, firstly the handset needs to be placed display down on the base, thus hiding the display from direct view. Secondly i feel the handset in particular is excessively larger than it needs to be, the keypad even with my medium hands is a challenge to use with one hand, due to the size it doesn’t altogether feel well balanced in the hand, and i feel there is a risk of dropping it. The base doesn’t require any kind of power supply, has the phone connection socket awkwardly located on the bottom of the base unit, with only a small recess provided to allow the cable to run off to the socket, the base does not to sit as flushly as would otherwise be possible and has a slight tendency to tip over. The handset functionality is is good when it does work properly excellent having all the usual function you would expect, including wireless use, digital answering machine, phone book caller display. The display is am ice white colour which is both functional and clear. The phone book has a memory large enough for most peoples needs and them some. The overall quality of calls is generally crisp and clear. The answering machin can record about 60 minutes of messages.

Reviews from purchasers :

  • Good speakerphone
  • Sound not very good
  • Clear, high quality calls

Real nice phone, simple and easy to use.

A very stylish dect phone only let down by poor instructions. It does have a few drawbacks which i shall mention first. Only a brief user guide provided and the full guide indicated does not seem to exist on the philips support website2. No details of any extra compatible dect handsets listed anywhere that i can find. It has a “baby sitter” option but i assume and extra gadget is needed and no details in the provided “short” user guide. Anyway, in operation it is very good and uses less than 1 watt of electricity so it is cheap to run. When in standby on the cradle, no indicators are visible and you can set it to either answer the call when you pick the handset up or when you press the button on the keypad. Answer-phone works well but again poor instructions on use.

Sleek, stylish home phone. . Philips cordless phone:a smart and sleek phone here from philips that maybe pips design over function. For everyday calls it is superb and the hands free function that we all take for granted now, is useful. Good because nestling this handset on your shoulder is a bit awkward. If you’re working from home and doing lots of conference calls and so forth you may find other models easier to use. The keypad is easy to use, sound quality not bad and the answering message function meets all criteria. Instructions like many of the philips gadgets could be better. As always they refer you to the website for more detailed support. Elsewhere in the house i have the swiss voice “pure” handsets that have outstanding clarity and claim low radiation. These remain my 5* favourites; but the philips is close behind.

Really stylish phone that works well. Really stylish phone that works well. Only thing against it is if you leave the handset upside down, it is prone to “spinning” sligtly which marks the matt black finish – beware.

Beauty is all very well at first sight. …said bernard shaw ‘but who ever looks at it when it has been in the house three days?’. There was something of a debate in our household as to whether the somewhat ellipsoid silhouette of this phone/cradle was attractive or merely appealed for being different. As with so many items where designers have agonized for months to come up with a design, after initial flirtation, handsome is as handsome does. I do like the wand style handset, which is reminiscent of the beocom 2. Its length enables a call to be held with less effort than the usual ‘phone to ear’ pose. It has a nice weight, the buttons, display and sound quality are clear and overall it was ‘neat’ in terms of functionality. As a phone it is a good phone. Slightly less practical, if the phone is sat in the cradle it is face down, which makes it impossible to see who is calling without lifting the handset. Although it offers ‘hands free talking’ there is no bluetooth, which means you can’t use it with a headset to wander around the house hands free.

It is surprisingly small and streamlined so fits in anywhere, and the quality is great for its size – can’t get over the clarity of sound on the speakerphone. Some of my relatives own cordless phones that sound awful the further they walk around the house with them, but this remains great wherever in the house you are, and the display is easily read.

There’s something a bit retro about this phones styling, lots of sharp square edges and black. However it has a nice clear screen and is easy to hold and use. The square styling is growing on me. Fast and simple setup and good sound quality.

    1. This is an excellent phone that does not take up too much space. With good simple instructions. Further more detailed instructions are avaiable on the web. Why is it that home phone technology is so far behind mobiles?. I guess because the big money is going into smartphones and many people just don’t use a home phone anymore. Anyway i’ve been for a good quality phone for ages. My old gigaset phones died very prematurely: terrible touchscreen, bad reception, battery died all the time. I will never buy this brand again. Took a punt on this phillips and so far i have to say i’m impressed. I use this for teleconferences from home, and i find the speakerphone loud and the call clarity on the “clear” setting to be superb. I’m really pleased with this. Other than that i agree with other reviewers – it’s not so comfortable if you have to hold to your ear for long periods.

    1. Nice design, but the sound is very faint. Despite having three settings for sound (warm, clear and soft), the sound is very faint and even setting it to the maximum 5 bars doesn’t seem to make much of a difference. Very easy to install, plug and go.
